The CCPL Rights Talk Series--Reform of the Human Rights Mechanisms

The presentation will highlight recent endeavours to reform the United Nations human rights mechanisms, in particular the replacement of the former Commission on Human Rights by a new Human Rights Council, and reform of the operation of the UN human rights treaty bodies. Some positive aspects and a number of drawbacks of the reform will be identified.
Mr. Schmidt holds a Doctorate from the University of Oxford. He has served the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in a number of functions, most recently as secretary of the Human Rights Committee, and currently as Chief of the Petitions Unit.
