Summer Institute on 'Media, Everyday Life and the Cultures of Consumption' June 17-19, 2005
Sponsored and organised by
The Center for Transcultural Studies, Chicago, and Journalism and Media Studies Centre, HKU
A group of distinguished scholars in sociology, cultural studies, philosophy, communication, journalism and the media will share their views and research on how the media, especially visual media, represents the pursuits of everyday life primarily in the idiom of consumption and how that idiom varies from one national/cultural site to another. We will also explore how the global integration of media, both in terms of ownership and message forms, calibrates and enables a variety of local cultures of consumption and how those cultures cast a shadow over other pursuits and engagements, be they political, artistic or religious.
