The Journalism and Media Studies Centre cordially invites
you to a seminar on:

The Democratization of Media by Dan Gillmor

Date: March 20, 2006 (Monday)
Time: 4:30p.m.-6:00p.m.
Venue: Council Chamber, 8/F Meng Wah Complex, The University
of Hong Kong
Speaker: Dan Gillmor, BBC News Columnist and Founder
of the Centre for Citizen Media

About the seminar:
The tools of media production, distribution and access
are now in everyone's hands. The result is a revolution
that is causing turmoil in the news industry, challenging
powerful business and governmental interests, and giving
consumers vast -- and sometimes unreliable -- choices
in what they read, listen to and view.

About the speaker:
Dan Gillmor is founder of the Centre for Citizen Media,
a project to enhance and expand grassroots media and its reach. The center
is an affiliate of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard
University Law School and the Graduate School of Journalism at the University
of California, Berkeley.
Gillmor is author of ‘We the Media: Grassroots Journalism
by the People, for the People’ (O'Reilly Media, 2004), a book that explains
the rise of citizens' media and why it matters.

From 1994 until early 2005 Gillmor was a columnist
at the San Jose Mercury News, Silicon Valley's daily newspaper, and wrote a
weblog for SiliconValley.com. He joined the Mercury News after
six years with the Detroit Free Press. Before that, he was with the Kansas
City Times and several newspapers in Vermont. During 2005 he worked
on media projects at Grassroots Media Inc.

Gillmor has been a visiting lecturer at the Journalism
and Media Studies Centre of The University of Hong Kong
since 1999.
