Respondent: Ms. Su Yaohua (Executive Director, Taipei Artist Village)

Time: 7-9pm
Venue: Function Room, Hong Kong Productivity Council (78 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon, Hong Kong)
Description of event: Queensland's Gallery of Modern Art opened on 1 December 2007 and represents both a cultural and civic marker for Queensland, and Australia. It was an initiative that sought to become an exemplar for the art of our time, especially given the Gallery's international reputation for collecting and exhibiting contemporary Asian art. The project was funded entirely by government, who increasingly understood the value of cultural diplomacy: and how the project would allow the government to give expression to a new urban precinct (it included additions to the State Library of Queensland, and additional work on the existing Queensland Art Gallery building) that would show Brisbane as modern, culturally literate and with a strong engagement with the art of our immediate region.
This address will discuss the cultural imperatives and the planning processes that influenced the government's decision to support the building - what the project represents internationally, and its critical and public reception. It will show how culture, the museum and diplomacy (often a precarious circuit) took on a new form in the 21st century.
