Meishi Street is located on the southwest side of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and runs from north to south. In this old city district, called Da Zha Lan, the city is carrying out a project to improve traffic and facilities for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. On December 27, 2004, the Beijing Municipal Government launched a project to widen Meishi Street to 25 meters from its original 8 meters. Many of the original residents living along the street faced the demolition of their homes and removal to other areas of the city.
This work is part of the Da Zha Lan Project.

簡介
煤市街，位于北京天安門廣場西南側的大栅欄地區，是一條南北走向的街道。爲了在2008年奧運會前改善大栅欄地區的交通和市政設施，對這一破敗的老舊城區 進行改造，從2004年12月27日起，北京市政府啓動了煤市街道路改擴建專案，要把原來8米寬的路面擴寬到25米，因此這條街上的多數原住民均面臨被拆遷的命運。張金利、孫鐵生和劉瑞萍是煤市街的三個拆遷戶，他們因爲不滿政府和拆遷公司的賠償方案而走上漫長的維權之路，最後均以失敗告終，就算是他們之中最頑强的張金利，亦難逃被强拆的結局。這是中國大多數城市在更新發展過程中司空見慣的故事，但這部影片特殊之處在于多數素材由當事人親自拍攝，那種置身其中的熱切以及他們親歷的傷痛，呈現出不可代言的力度。他們的抗爭行動改變了煤市街尋常的市井空間，讓它煥發出一種新的意味。在劇烈變遷的時代，手持攝影機的張金利們，正在成爲另類歷史的紀錄者。
