自我沉迷而且毫無目標，安德拉絲在生活中缺乏方向與目的。他辭去了療養院的工作，進入到一個工廠。然後他娶了一個不愛他的女人，成為了她孩子的繼父。他惟一逃避現實的方法是聽音樂、跳舞和在當地的酒館借酒消愁。

Tarr presents a portrait of life in Budapest circa 1981. The main character, András, is a talented but unambitious musician. He plays the violin exceptionally well, but doesn't think he could make a living at it because he's not classically trained. Instead, he wastes his life away at a factory in a small town; he only works there because he has to support his illegitimate son. Ostensibly following a man as he drifts through life consuming alcohol, dancing, and listening to music, the film is a subtle meditation on the aimlessness of life.
