一對年老的夫婦來到東京，探訪已成家的兒女，剛開始的時候雖然受到歡迎，可是城市人沒有時間陪伴老人家，最後卻被當成累贅。反而是戰死的大兒子的媳婦，對二老關心備置。回到自己鄉下的老家沒多久，老太太就過了身，兒孫們全都回來，匆匆辦妥了後事，就趕著返回城，留下老先生一人，只有大兒子的寡婦願意多留幾天，陪伴孤單的、寂寞的老先生。

An elderly couple journey to Tokyo to visit their children and are confronted by indifference, ingratitude and selfishness. The children genuinely wish to spend time with their parents, and do, but as they have lives and families of their own they find it difficult to maintain a balance between the two. When the parents are packed off to a resort by their impatient children, the film deepens into an unbearably moving meditation on mortality.
