The HK democratic fighters have scored an important symbolic victory against the force of authoritarianism. Not only is the space of democracy peacefully repossessed by the people in the face of a massive police maneuver, it is also a testimony of a vigorous and persistent will to true democracy and peace by the HK people who took part in the defence. In what happened tonight, the physical strength of the police met with the autonomous outpouring of democratic energy of people from all over the streets. The police eventually retreated. The lesson is this : the struggle for democracy will be won as long as we understand, and let our supporters understand, that it is a battle of finite versus the infinite. Armed with the ideal of democracy, peace and persistency, we are always and will always be on the side of the infinite.
The reality is that police will come back with greater force and more weapons. The fight for democracy will encounter setbacks. There will be periods when hopes seem to be closing on us, or time seems to stop. The strength of democracy grows between the oscillation of despair and jubilance, between illusion and reality, and between darkness and light. History has proved convincingly on this point. Since the idea of direct election germinated in 1983 by a group of young HK middle class, the people's consciousness for democracy and self-determination have grown tremendously especially after 1997. The present Umbrella movement is the watershed in the history of Hong Kong struggle for democracy, when the consciousness has infused a broad spectrum of the population so much that people, combined with civility and restraints, have transformed the consciousness into spontaneous and powerful actions on the streets to demand for what HK rightfully deserves - a fair and open election procedure in 2017 for an accountable HK Government that represents HK interests.
The battle for the democracy is a battle that we cannot lose. The iron grip of the HK authoritarianism that sides itself with the local Monguls and the CCP is encroaching on our way of livings from all sides - environmentally, culturally, financially and politically. Only through true democracy can we restore our freedom to determine our own destiny. I urge you to support the fight for HK democracy.
