Emergency Joint Statement by Global Overseas Students
In response to the actions taken by protesters at the Legislative Council on 1 July, 2019, we as overseas students make the following statement:
因應昨天七一金鐘一帶的群眾自發行動，我們一群身處於外國的留學生作出聲明如下：
We understand and echo the serious desperation, the grief and anger that are driving the young protesters’ actions today in LegCo. Since the first anti-extradition march on 9 June, Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the Hong Kong government have consistently failed to listen to public sentiment and fully withdraw the Extradition Law Amendment Bill. They have failed to condemn or even investigate the police brutality against protesters on 12 June, which constituted violations of international law and standards on the use of force by law enforcement officials as determined by Amnesty International.
昨天反送中佔領立法會示威者的絕望、哀痛和憤怒我們感同身受。自第一次6.9反送中遊行，林鄭月娥和香港政府就一直忽視香港民意，直到今天還未撤回送中惡法。國際特赦組織已經確認警察在6.12示威中使用的武力已經違反國際法和標準，但政府不僅沒有作出譴責，更拒絕調查警方的暴力執法。
Since the introduction of the Extradition Amendment Bill, we have seen the largest ever turnout of protesters in our city’s history: 2 million Hong Kongers from all walks of life marched against the extradition law amendment bill on 16 June, and over half a million on 1 July. Countless other diverse, self-initiated protests, petitions and acts of civil disobedience illustrate the breadth and depth of the resistance to the bill and Hong Kongers’ deep anxiety over the fast-accelerating erosion of our freedoms and human rights since the Handover.
自從逃犯條例首讀後，二百萬香港人參與了6.16的大遊行，展現了社會各界對送中惡法的反對。7.1大遊行我們又看到五十萬人走上街上反送中。除了集會和遊行，我們也看到香港人充滿創意的抵抗方法。這些都是是香港人回歸後自由及人權逐漸被侵蝕的回應。
Despite the unprecedented opposition from society and the clear demands of the people, the government has not shown any willingness to withdraw the extradition law, and repeatedly rejected all attempts at communication by the protesters and pro-democratic figures. The actions of Carrie Lam, most recently in her meeting with police forces shortly after the 12 June protests, show a complete disregard for the will of the people.
面對社會已史無前例地大規模表達反修例的清晰民意，香港政府仍然未有撤回修訂法案，並不斷拒絕與抗爭者對話。林鄭月娥在6.12示威後即選擇與警方會面，顯示她完全無視人民的聲音。
We have also witnessed countless protesters injured by police batons, pepper spray, and tear gas; journalists attacked in the line of duty; civilians stopped and searched in MTR stations. Three young Hong Kongers have lost their lives amidst the deep hopelessness and frustration that pervades the city. We strongly condemn the government’s cruel disregard that has led us to this situation.
我們亦目睹警棍、胡椒噴霧和催淚彈傷害了無數示威者；盡忠職守的記者受襲；警方在港鐵站無理截停及搜查平民百姓。在絕望和沮喪的陰霾中，三位香港人犧牲了寶貴的生命。我們強烈譴責政府冷酷無情，一直置之不理，造成今日的局面。
As overseas students from Hong Kong, we repeat the five demands of the Civil Human Rights Front, pan-democratic legislators and up to 2 million Hong Kongers since the beginning of June:
我們一群心繫香港的海外留學生在此重申民間人權陣線、泛民議員及超過二百萬香港市民自六月初便提出的訴求：
1. Complete withdrawal of the extradition bill;
完全撤回逃犯條例修訂法案；
2. Investigate the responsibility of the shootings;
成立獨立調查委員會徹查警察開槍事件；
3. Retract the characterisation of the protests as a riot;
撤回暴動定性；
4. Release arrested protesters;
釋放被捕人士；
5. Universal suffrage for Hong Kong!
還香港市民真普選！
