故事講述戶田家本是一個大家族，一向意氣風發，可是當一家之主病逝後，整個家族便起了很大的變化。妻子為他的身後事日夜奔波勞碌，處理過遺產之後，家道中落，兒子要跑到中國的天津工作，母親帶著最小的女兒被迫搬往各子女的家中居住，結果母親跟媳婦日漸不和，家庭的凝聚力隨著父親的猝死而逐漸瓦解，母女最後被迫躲到海邊破屋，感到無限的唏噓與孤寂。

The first box-office hit for Ozu in Japan, The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family anticipates the later masterpieces such as Tokyo Story. After the death of the father of an upper-class family, his wife and daughter has to struggle to survive. Tensions arise when they moved in with a married son, so they continue to move around from one household to the next, but they are always unwelcomed. When her youngest son returns from work in Tianjin, he scolds his siblings for their selfishness.
