各位校董、校友、同學、同事：

圖書館擴建迎四年制烽火台保留不損半分

近日有傳言指大學為擴建圖書館，將拆毀中大地標烽火台。我特撰此信向大家解釋，這種說法是完全沒有根據的。校長亦曾在不同場合一再表明，不能對圖書館前的大學廣場有任何改動，烽火台這個見證本校歷史的重要地標，在工程完成後必須原址重置，回復舊觀，一寸都不能少。

在圖書館擴建工程進行期間，大學廣場部分需要封閉一段時間，以利工程進行。廣場是大學舉行畢業禮的場地之一，為免影響典禮舉行，預計廣場會在 2009 年畢業禮後暫時封閉，為期不超過一年；一俟圖書館擴建工程完成即會重開，大家原來熟悉的事物，如烽火台、惠園、「灌叢圖案」等都會在原址還原，與今天所見無異。

恢復大學四年學制，師生校友們期盼已久。大學圖書館擴建，是為 2012 年恢復本科四年制作準備的重要項目。因為到時大學將額外增加三千名本科生，現有圖書館將不敷應用，亟需擴大。原來的圖書館擴建方案，提議在原圖書館之側興建一座多層的新翼，樓高將超逾田家炳樓。由於這和周遭景物極不協調，還會影響沿林蔭大道延伸之中軸線，對景觀造成無可彌補的破壞，因此遭這項目的專責建設委員會否決。

其後提出的新方案把擴建部分建於地底，與圖書館地庫相連。這個方案雖然在技術上更困難，成本更高，但建設委員會認為更為可取，因為它既能增加圖書館面積，又能保存四周乃至整個校園本部在視覺上和建築物之間的協調一致。

由擴建圖書館地庫方案提出開始，校長就已強調，不能對大學廣場有任何改動，而廣場上包括烽火台在內的結構和建築，必須妥為保存，並在工程完成後原址重置，不改外觀。建設委員會亦向建築顧問公司和有師生代表在內的圖書館使用者小組，說明上述立場。建築顧問公司將會為烽火台和惠園等部件編號標籤，並拍照存檔，以便日後重置。

擴建圖書館的工程有必要及時完成，大學廣場、烽火台及其代表的中大理念和獨特的歷史，亦一定要原原本本保留給未來的中大人。我衷心希望大家能理解和支持，讓大家在不久將來一方面目睹圖書館完成擴建，服務未來的師生；另一方面看到大家熟悉的烽火台、惠園和「灌叢圖案」，一如往昔佇立校園。

Preserve the Beacon for Posterity

There are rumours that the Beacon, so long an icon of the Chinese University, would be demolished to make way for the new library extension. I write to reassure you that nothing could be farther from the truth. The Vice-Chancellor has reiterated on several occasions the non-negotiable position that no alteration would be made to the University Square and that the repository of so much of our history, the Beacon, must be reinstated in its existing form when construction is completed.

To allow the extension work to be carried out, the Square will be temporarily closed for less than a year, probably after the 2009 Congregation so that there is no disruption to the ceremonial ground of any Congregation. Upon completion of the new library extension, the Square will be re-opened with its signature features including the Beacon, the Forum, and the "Bushes" fully reinstated, on exactly the same spots with exactly the same appearances.

The University Library has to be extended to accommodate an estimated increase of 3,000 undergraduate students upon reversion to our long-cherished four-year curriculum in 2012. Initial designs would have developed the Library laterally and skywards, resulting in a multi-storey wing that surpasses the Tin Ka Ping Building in height. The incongruity with the view from the University Mall would be glaring, and such designs were rejected by the building committee convened for the project because the distortion of the central axis along the University Mall would be irremediable.

The alternative of developing the Library underground was then explored. Though technically more challenging and incurring higher costs, it was deemed a better option which could enhance library capacity while preserving the visual and architectural integrity of the neighborhood and, in fact, the entire Central Campus.

From the deliberation stages of extending the Library basement, the Vice-Chancellor has stressed that no alteration must be made to the Square and that the structures and architecture thereon including the Beacon must be preserved and reinstated when the construction is completed. This has been communicated by the building committee to relevant parties such as the architectural consultant and the Library Users Group comprising both staff and student representatives. The architectural consultant will label and photograph components of the Beacon and the Forum to facilitate reinstatement.

The library extension must be completed on time. At the same time, the University Square, the Beacon, and the beliefs and history of CUHK these embody, must be preserved for posterity for what they are. I hope that with the understanding and support of all of you, we can see both the completion of the library extension for the future generations of staff and students, and the preservation of the Beacon, the Forum, and the "Bushes" as we have always known them.

咪癲啦，以前開過港大百週年的會，都有講過話圖書館甚至校園的GFA會直接影響一部份排名機構的排名。
所以港大先至整個騎呢的跨大樓Learning Commons可以將公共地方計入圖書館地，中大死都要起圖書館之嘛。

克勤仔力保烽火台

今日《星島日報》

中大傳出可能要拆毀地標烽火台後，各中大學生及校友均非常緊張，校友兼新任校董的民建聯陳克勤又會如何「保護」烽火台呢？盧駿得悉，原來「克勤仔」對事件亦非常著緊，第一時間致電校董會秘書處了解事件，知道原來圖書館進行擴建工程時，可能需要把烽火台上的雕塑「暫時」遷移。

「克勤仔」就認為，興建地底圖書館亦不一定要遷移烽火台，可效法港鐵的做法，用鐵枝支撐地底，以中大人才輩出，傑出的建築工程師多不勝數，一定有辦法想出其他替代方法。

「克勤仔」擔心，要另覓地方安置烽火台上的雕塑亦不容易，偶一不慎可能會破壞雕塑，要安全地為雕塑另置地基亦需花費不少，因此最好就以不變應萬變，他會一直留意事件發展，與校董會保持聯絡。

剛收到阿迪的電話，他今天跑到中大了解詳細的設計：

政府批了一萬尺樓面面積，若以千多二千尺的面積計，圖書館新翼最少六層，最多十幾層（視乎有無 maximize空間）。為免建築物過高，新翼決定建四層，地底和地下兩層為停車場，地底再向峰火台延伸建資訊教育中心（放電腦），實行廿四小時開放。

問題是：若新翼大樓不要停車場，把該兩層改為資訊教育中心，就不用另外掘地。所以始終是停車場佔地問題導致要掘峰火台。

冠名

佢收得呢2個項目咁埋，又唔見有向立法會申請撥款，好可能是已經搵到冠名，呢個冠名可能是大家會感到驚訝的。至於圖書館需求，其實要多d書可以學科大咁裝多d軌道便可。而圖書館日間其實是有唔少人入去開會、溫書，係本部整多幾間日間讀書室便可有效分流。

大學排名與搵錢方便

擴建圖書館當然唔係唔夠書，而係與大學排名有關，圖書館夠大，書夠多會著數。如果大家有人有時間去研究大學排名的 index 可能會發現裡面有啲面積與學生比的數字。。。（呢樣野要研究）。國內大學，書比香港少，圖書館大而空，但排名卻超高，背後可能是這些 index。

硬將停車場叫做圖書館新新翼，相信與籌款有關。政府大概會撥款起 standard的圖書館大樓，要往地下掘要加錢（工程貴），所以新圖書館要搵有錢佬捐錢冠名，xxx圖書館當然比xxx停車場好聽多了。so far 未聽過有錢佬會比錢係大學起 xxx 停車場，係都幾偉大。

當然，現在的消息都是人傳人咁出嚟，所以要求公開圖則與會議記錄囉。但在這之前，我地唔可以跌入校方圖書館新新翼的說法。

圖書館新新翼﹖

在今年四月的校園發展計劃中，校方已表示2012年有系列的項目已經落實，拒絕諮詢這些項目。當中其中一項是圖書館新翼，地點不是烽火台，不是近李達三停車場，已是近聯合山邊的停車場﹗﹗﹗

藍色為2012已落實項目，紅色部份為新書院，橙色為有機會發展的地方，完全沒有將烽火台包括在內。究竟為何會爆多個新新翼出泥﹖
